A New Community Hub for Youth and Their Families

Philadelphia Youth Basketball’s Alan Horwitz “Sixth Man” Center features 7 basketball courts, an education suite, mental health oasis, and multimedia labs

“Sixth Man” Center

Senator Hughes was proud to join Philadelphia Youth Basketball for the ribbon cutting at the Alan Horwitz “Sixth Man” Center in North Philadelphia. The facility is a project that’s been 10 years in the making. It’s a result of a number of leaders working together and fighting for investments, including over $4.5M in state investments Senator Hughes advocated for.

March 2022: Senator Hughes has been involved with this project since its inception. In March 2022, he presented the PYB with a $2.5M grant to support their work on the community center.

Senator Hughes MCed the event and welcomed leaders including Mayor Cherelle Parker, Councilmember Isaiah Thomas, and the Philadelphia 76ers most loyal fan, Alan Horwitz. The project has been led by the Philly Youth Basketball organization, a youth-empowerment organization that uses basketball to help underserved communities. They serve about 1,200 youth per year, and with the new “Sixth Man” Center could expand to having more than 5,000 children and teenagers involved in their programs.

The aim of the Alan Horwitz Center is to provide everything young people need to thrive academically and intellectually, socially and emotionally, & civically and vocationally. Basketball may get them to the center, but they’ll also have access to education and mental health support services when they’re there. In addition to basketball, the facility will house a:

  • Multimedia lab
  • Healthy foods café
  • Financial empowerment center for internships
  • Financial literacy
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Civic dialogue and engagement arena
  • Mental wellness services
  • And physical wellness services such as traditional fitness equipment and physical therapy and injury rehab
